Inside the Historical Archive of the former Psychiatric Hospital Santa Maria della Pietà in Rome, two immersive narrative environments unfold, where exceptional storytellers revive the historical memory and contemporary significance of the Archive itself.
In the introductory room, the Archivist —interactive full-scale holographic figure— is the protagonist of the installation “Remembering the Future”. He guides visitors through an interactive journey into the history of the former Asylum, the lives of its inmates and the related thematic strands emerging from the Archive. The same Archivist is also present in the second room, where he introduces the Voice of the Archive, the central entity of the interactive installation developed through the European-patented methodology linked to the European trademark OLOS®.
This advanced conversational intelligence system allows visitors to ask questions in both written and spoken form, ensuring an accessible and inclusive interaction.
The Voice of the Archive understands requests, guides users and generates responses in real time, drawing from a rich knowledge base built through a meticulous process of human-led training, review and validation, thus ensuring scientific rigour. This knowledge base is rooted in authentic sources, compiled through the collaboration with Memoria —the commissioning archival services company— together with the Museum of the Mind and the Historical Archive of Santa Maria della Pietà. It is primarily based on the volume Matti, indemoniati e vagabondi. Dynamics of Psychiatric Internment between the 19th and 20th Century by Professor Vinzia Fiorino.
The installation features a touch-based visual-conceptual map, which visually maps out the main thematic areas of the structured knowledge base. Each thematic area is assigned a distinct colour, chosen in accordance with principles of colour psychology, a sensory cue that fosters immediate, intuitive connections. As the user interacts with the system, synchronised light and sound elements are activated, radiating through the space and highlighting the actual archival files placed throughout the surrounding space.
In response to specific queries, the system also activates immersive multimedia sequences specifically conceived on the basis of historical and archival sources, further enriched by additional research and processed through generative AI tools, offering a unique and authentic reimagining of the stories.
