Axial disorders —namely alterations in posture, balance, and gait— represent an increasingly significant clinical and social issue, particularly among the elderly. The most widely used tools today rely on clinical rating scales based on direct patient observation. These struggle to capture the three-dimensional complexity of postural control and offer quantitative parameters that lack reliability over time.
The project addresses this need with a prototype immersive system that brings the patented OLOS® interactive methodology into the clinical field, integrating it with artificial intelligence and precision sensors. Consequently, OLOS®KINEMA reconstructs the patient’s posture and movements in real time through life-size holographic representations, without the need for visual filters, providing clinicians with a three-dimensional, quantitative assessment of movement disorders in Parkinson’s disease and the elderly population.
The project will run for 24 months and aims to advance the technology from its current maturity level (TRL 3-4) to the demonstration of a validated prototype in a real clinical environment (TRL 7), actively involving both patients and clinicians.
The pathway is divided into four phases: a feasibility study and the construction of two immersive rooms; the collection of clinical and motor data; the development of artificial intelligence models for movement analysis; and the final system integration, culminating in demonstration days.
The project is carried out by a consortium led by Blue Cinema TV S.r.l., which holds the European OLOS® patent. The Niccolò Cusano University of Rome — Department of Engineering (M3Lab) serves as the research body responsible for clinical and motor data collection and AI model development, while Sapienza University of Rome — Department of Human Neuroscience provides clinical and scientific consultancy and supervision. Expected outcomes include a validated clinical prototype, a structured clinical-motor dataset and new know-how in movement analysis applied to healthcare, yielding benefits for both the industrial and academic sectors.
